When Sean Martin was shot in the hip he thought his days in law enforcement were over. Leaving the force he opened up his own private investigative business, and for a while enjoyed success until a homophobic ex-colleague spread a story about Sean assaulting an underage boy, the son of an influential congressman.

Overnight, Sean's business tanked, leaving him broke and with zero clients. Then Master Vampire, Rafael Barrantes, hires him to find the murderer of Julian Hunter, a young male escort. Sean isn't crazy about working for a vampire--but all that changes when he meets Arturo Menendez, Rafael's private secretary who immediately tries, and succeeds in seducing Sean. In between bouts of the most amazing sex Sean has ever had, he discovers that the facts surrounding Julian's murder have been swept under the carpet.

In the process of his investigation Sean is beaten, kidnapped by a bad cop, and bitten by a rogue vampire. With the odds stacked against him, can he possibly ever solve the mystery of Julian's murder, and can Arturo, even with his vampire powers, save Sean from a grisly death?

J.P. Bowie offers up a fresh take on the vampire genre, and an interesting murder mystery. I liked his character Sean Martin a good deal, and sympathized with the unhappy position in which he finds himself – betrayed by a former colleague in a way that shames and nearly breaks him. Lonely and down on his luck, Sean needs a break.

Set in Los Angeles a generation in the future, Sean is approached by a powerful vampire named Rafael Barrantes. While Barrantes, all aloof politesse and brooding good looks, never becomes much more than an aristocratic straight man (as it were), his secretary and longtime friend Arturo Menendez sweeps into the picture like a 1940s diva and steals the scene. The two-hundred year old Catalan vampire becomes Sean’s instant lover and sometime sidekick. I liked the way Bowie contrasts the relationship between Arturo and Rafael with Arturo’s impulsive romance with Sean. The modern take on vampiric powers and weakness (sunlight bad, but they can fly, drink wine and read minds) is entertaining, but I yearned for a little more about the vampire place in society. Clearly in this future world, vampires have replaced gay folk as the number one target of bigots and fundamentalists. Bowie gives us some of this, but I would have loved to have more. Strangely, there is virtually no cool new technology in 2034 (when I’ll be 81!), which was a minor let-down. If you’re going to the trouble to set your story in the future, there really ought to be a few good gadgets.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly, but I was never charmed by the writing, and was actually a little put off by all the sex, which was, for me, redundant and clumsily described. Of course Arturo and Sean’s passion for each other is important, as is Sean’s awakening to the possibilities of a real romance with this charming undead lothario from centuries ago. But Bowie’s sexual descriptions slip into bodice-ripper clichés, and while the sex is described as emotionally intense, it never actually felt emotionally intense as I read it.

Three stars is a good rating from me. I really liked the vampire as reimagined by J.P. Bowie, and appreciated both the plot and the characters. Sean and Arturo deserve more page time, and perhaps we’ll see a sequel.

The Vampire and the PI edition by JP Bowie Romance eBooks Reviews

This author is very good with writing interesting storylines that keep the reader involved with the characters. Sean and Auturo were good together and there were a lot of twists that involved a lot of characters. The overall story was interesting all the same. I think this is the 3rd story by this author that I have read, and for the most part, I like their style.
So this was kind of fun. I'm dipping into some paranormal MM stories lately. A couple of GR friends liked this, and J.P. Bowie is a new to me author. It was far more erotic romance, vampire style, than mystery but that was fine. I kind of liked the vampires powers being mostly patterned on the traditional myths but with lots of sex! It was rather a lot but there was a plot. It wasn't too hard to figure out some of the bad guys and it wasn't completely solved by actual detective work. There was still suspense and danger that made me want to see what would happen. It was pretty much light, fun, sexy reading with added fantastical elements with the vampires. I'll read another one!
Love it
My first book by this Author and I'm happy to say not the last. Well written, great characters and storyline. I cannot wait for the next story!
I don't read any vampire stories unless they really peak my interest. J.P. Bowie has brought me back into the fold. Smartly written vampire/human story and great cast of characters. If you are familiar with "My Vampire and I" series this is a spin-off from that series.
